Quick-Step Surface & Edge Protect+: authenticity and ease-of-use
Floors get a lot thrown at them over the years: mud and dirt from outside, all sorts of sauces, foods, wine… These accidents and years of use and cleaning can make a hardwood floor look worn out and dirty. To solve this age-old problem, flooring brand Quick-Step has developed a technology that makes hardwood floors easier to clean and maintain than ever before. The result is a floor that will remain looking beautiful, day after day, year after year. Its all-new Surface and Edge Protect+ technology represents a new level in flooring performance, bringing authenticity with unprecedented ease-of-maintenance.
For hardwood flooring, time is the biggest enemy. Over the years, grime gets stuck in the pores and grain, while dust settles into the edges of planks and begins to darken them. Cleaning – even with a damp cloth – will cause the floor to soak up water in the joint at the face end of the plank. This makes the joints turn white and after a while, they become dark due to collected dirt.
An edge over the competition
“The first step we took to keep this from happening was introducing our water-repellent technology, Edge Protect +, for both oiled and varnished hardwood floors,” explains Chief Designer Joyce Van Waeleghem. “This innovation prevents water from penetrating the joint. As a result, the floors remain as new, even after years of use and cleaning.”
A+ for protection
The logical next step was to make the surface of Quick-Step’s Parquet floors impenetrable as well: “Our latest innovation is Surface & Edge Protect+ technology,” says Van Waeleghem. “It is specifically developed to keep dirt and water from the floor’s joints and from settling into the pores and grain. Moreover, it makes the floor dirt repellent, for easier cleaning. With Surface & Edge Protect+, we are taking the surface protection of hardwood flooring to a whole new level.” The technology is currently available for Quick-Step’s one-strip flooring with a varnished finish.
Floors that feature Quick-Step’s Surface & Edge Protect+ technology will keep their authentic, natural looks for years or even decades – even when they are installed in high-traffic spaces that need to be cleaned frequently. Moreover, a major benefit is that the technology makes even stubborn dirt quickly and easily removable with nothing more than a damp cloth. It also allows users to apply more water when necessary – all without causing any problems.
Authenticity versus practicality
According to Joyce Van Waeleghem, the biggest challenge in developing this technology was ensuring that the additional protection of Surface & Edge Protect+ would not affect the beautiful natural look of the floor. “Anyone can add a really thick layer of protective varnish or oil to a hardwood floor to make it easy to clean,” she says. “But that’s not what we are looking for these days; we want a floor that looks authentic with an extra matt appearance and a deep structure. But we also want it to be easy to maintain, with long-lasting good looks. With Surface and Edge Protect+, we really knocked the balance between practicality and beauty out of the park.”
The price of authenticity: age-old parquet flooring issues
When it comes to authenticity, nothing beats a genuine hardwood floor. However, as many will agree, keeping your wooden floor looking sharp over the years is no easy feat. Here are some of the most common issues that can pop-up over the years. At least, if your floor isn’t equipped with Quick-Step’s Surface & Edge protect+ technology.
- Dirty pores: Traditional wooden floors – unless they are lacquered – often have a somewhat rough structure. This causes dirt and dust to get stuck, making the floor look unclean.
- Dark edges and dust: Dust doesn’t just get caught in the pores, however. For many wooden floors, signs of aging are first noticeable on the edges of the planks and between joints.
- Dark and dirty grain: The grain is what gives its floor your unique personality. But without proper protection, it will turn dark and dirty.
- White bevel: Ironically, the much-feared white bevel is often caused by cleaning your parquet floor too often and with too much water. As moisture gets trapped between the joints, it discolours the wood, and damages the lacquer. Surface & Edge protect+ prevents this by adding a water-repellent protection on the edges.
